Incorporate empathy into your engineering practice
I operate with the assumption that engineers and technical practitioners want to do social impact work and utilize their skills to make a difference. Oftentimes, the rigorous training we go through falls short of sharing resources and frameworks for ethical and empathetic practice. I founded engineer with empathy to emphasize the importance of historical context, sociopolitical landscapes, and the soft skills necessary for working thoughtfully with systematically marginalized, low-resource communities. Engineers and academics are more than just technical problem-solvers. While their expertise is essential, they must learn to approach their work with empathy, humility, and respect to make a lasting, positive impact.
